-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) CD Quality Music Volume Control

In some configurations Heroes of Might and Magic may be unable to
control the volume of your CD player from within the game. If you
cannot adjust the music volume in the game option screen you may be
able to control the volume using the mixer control supplied with your
sound card. This will be the case if you have your CD-ROM drive
connected directly to your speakers or to the line-in jack on your
sound card.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) DirectX

While testing Heroes of Might and Magic for Windows 95 we have noticed
that on certain machines DirectX, which is required to play Heroes in
full screen mode, did not install completely. If you receive a
DirectX error while running the game you can attempt to install
DirectX manually.

To install DirectX manually:

  1. Go the the DIRECTX directory on the Heroes of Might and Magic CD.
  2. Run DXSETUP.EXE
  3. Click on "ReInstall DirectX."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3) Screen Resolution

If you are playing Heroes of Might and Magic in a window you should
set your video card to a 256 color mode instead of 16, 24, or 32 bit
mode. Heroes of Might and Magic will work best in this mode. If you
play Heroes in a video mode using more colors you may experience
slowness and other problems with the graphics in the window. You may
also have difficulty if you resize the windows to be smaller than the
recommended 640x480 size. We recommend playing Heroes of Might and
Magic in full screen mode for best performance and compatibility.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4) Changes to the manual / Troubleshooting

The game options (page 30 in the online manual) have been updated.

The Autosave option was removed. Heroes now always saves your game
automatically between each turn.

A sound quality option was added. The sound quality option lets you
switch between 8-bit and CD quality music.

CD quality music sounds better and will allow Heroes to run faster on
your computer. If you do not hear any music in the game or
experience problems with the CD quality music you should switch to
8-bit instead. You may switch between 8-bit and CD quality using the
sound quality option in the game, or by holding down a key while the
game is loading. To switch to 8-bit music, hold down the F6 key
until the opening graphic is displayed. To switch to CD quality
music use the F7 key. You only need to hold the key down once and
your preference will be saved for the future.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5) Map Editor

Any objects placed in the overlay squares of a random town or castle
(the spaces directly above the town or castle) will be deleted
automatically by the Editor when you save the map. Objects placed in
the overlay squares of non-random towns and castles are unaffected.
