Permissions and Sybase Central

Access to Adaptive Server, databases, and database objects is controlled through privileges that users receive automatically and through permissions that are assigned explicitly. Automatic privileges come with the roles associated with the user’s login or come with database or object ownership. Explicit permissions are granted by authorized users.

To access Adaptive Server, a user must have an Adaptive Server login. To access a database or database objects, the user must be created as a user in the database. Unless a database user has automatic privileges in the database because of role assignment, group membership, or database or object ownersnghip, the user must be granted explicit permissions.

StepsSetting up a new user to use a database

  1. Create a new Adaptive Server login for the user and, optionally, assign roles or aliases to the login.

  2. Add the user to the database, and, optionally, add the user to a group.

  3. Grant permissions to the user to use commands and to use database objects.

NoteAdaptive Server also permits “guest” users to access databases. For information about guest users and for more information about controlling access to a database, see the System Administration Guide.

Using Sybase Central to manage Adaptive Server may require permissions in addition to those listed in Table 25-1. This is because obtaining the information required to fill the fields in a property sheet can require permissions beyond those required for a particular task.

An indication that you have insufficient permission to manage an object is an error message indicating that select permissions have been denied on an object when you try to open a property sheet. If you receive this message, the property sheet can still open, but some information may be unavailable.
